When you are considering a minor or major change in your interior decorating scheme, remember how important lighting is to the look of your home. A small refresh of your décor might include purchasing new lamps or a new piece of furniture, while a more drastic change may involve painting the walls and installing new lighting fixtures. The appearance of the paint colors is closely tied to the lighting in your house. Read on to learn about the impact lighting can have on interior paint colors.
How Wavelengths Affect Color
The human eye perceives the light reflected by an object or a surface as color. For instance, if you choose a paint color that absorbs red light and reflects blue light, it will appear as blue. The lighting in a room can greatly affect the way a paint color looks. Two paint colors might appear almost identical under one kind of light but quite different when they are exposed to different ends of the light spectrum. For this reason, it is important to consider your lighting choices at the same time you pick out your paint colors. Bring paint chips home, or paint a few test areas to see how your home lighting works with the colors.
How to Choose Your Lighting
With all of the options for light fixtures and types of light bulbs, it can be hard to select the perfect combination for different rooms in your home. If your kitchen is a deep, rich shade of red, you may need to use brighter bulbs for any recessed lighting so that the room doesn’t feel too dark. For a cozy feel in the bedroom, incandescent bulbs in table lamps work best, giving your room a relaxing, reddish glow. When you have task lighting in the living room and office, you can use bright LED bulbs and switch them off when you don’t need them.

Winter is finally over, which means it’s time to get on top of your spring cleaning chores! As you vacuum, scrub, and mop your way to a tidier house, don’t overlook your lamp shades. Lamp shades can accumulate dust, dirt, and pet hair, and you won’t get the full benefit of your lamp with a dirty shade. After you clean your lamp shade, you may be surprised at how much your home lighting improves! Here are a few tips on how to clean your lamp shades without damaging them:
Fabric Lamp Shades
Lamp shades come in many different materials, including a variety of fabrics. It is easiest to clean fabric-covered lamp shades in the bathtub or in a sink or bucket if you do not have a tub. Fill the tub with a few inches of cool water, enough to submerge one side of the shade. Use a mild cleanser to create some suds, and then roll the lampshade around to remove dirt and stains. After it looks like the shade is fairly clean, drain the dirty water and refill with clean water. Roll the lamp shade through the clean water to rinse off any remaining suds or dirt. You may want to use a blow dryer on a low setting to speed up the drying process, or simply air dry the shade out of direct sunlight.
Glued Lamp Shades
Some lamp shades have fabric on the outside but are glued to another material instead of being stitched. Do not get shades with glue on them wet, as moisture can ruin the integrity of the shade. Instead, use your vacuum’s brush attachment to gently remove dirt and debris. If you have animals, especially cats who like to rub against lamp shades, you may find that using a lint roller will work in a pinch. Lint rollers are a handy tool to have around when you don’t have time to get out the vacuum!

Since the modern kitchen is more than just a place for preparing meals, it’s only appropriate that its lighting plan accommodates a wide range of activities. When designing a kitchen lighting scheme, be sure to choose fixtures that represent recessed, accent, and task lighting styles. Mixing these three types of lighting will help create a space that is both functional and attractive.
As you will learn in this video, another important consideration to make when creating your lighting plan is the location of your light switches. Instead of depending on one master light to control the fixtures, scatter switches throughout the room for added convenience.
